May 11, 2012 8 a.m. – 6 p.m. Cindy Zeller’s students at the new Learning Center at the old Linlee School are having their second annual plant sale today, Friday, May 11, from 10 a.m. -6 p.m. The school is at the corner of Georgetown and Spurr Roads, 2420 Spurr Road. This sale raises money for programs, including more gardening and bigger, better future plant sales. There are heirloom tomatoes, peppers, hanging baskets and more. There should be bargains galore. The Down to Earth Garden Club of Lexington will be offering plants for sale which have been grown locally in members’ gardens. The 2012 sale will be held – rain or shine – on Saturday, May 12, 8 a.m. – 2 p.m.. at the Woodland Christian Church parking lot, 530 E. High Street.

Growing Community: Learn How to Grow Vegetables May 12, 2012. You can pick up some basic gardening information this Saturday, May 12, 2012. From 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. at the Gainesway Community Center, a collaborative of advisors will be giving basic how-to instruction on making container gardens, raised beds, herb growing, and soil preparation.

Kentucky Herb Festival May 19, 2012. Wine & Roses is the theme of the 20th annual Kentucky Herb Festival sponsored by the Kentucky Herb Association is on Saturday, May 19, 2012 from 9:00am – 3:00pm. The 2012 Herb of the Year is the rose. The festival is held at Lakeview Park, Franklin County Fairgrounds just off US 460 in Frankfort, Kentucky. There is no charge for the festival but there is a nominal parking fee of $3. There will be vendors from all over the state selling a wide variety of herbal crafts, products, foods, and plants., as well as a special group of Kentucky authors. The Mink Run Consort will entertain with musical offerings of traditional Celtic and American music. At noon there will be an auction of garden and herbal items, the proceeds of which benefit future KHA festivals. For more information, contact Sue Wash 502.535.6885.

2011 May 16 In Louisville Whitehall House & Gardens: 8th Annual Peony Festival … Show, Sale and Roy
Khlem Lecture. The gardens will be open to the public, free of charge, during daylight hours. As is tradition, you are invited to tour Whitehall’s gardens throughout the day and enjoy our impressive collection of over 50 peony varieties. Peonies can be an integral component of herbaceous plantings and mixed borders, creating an enchating effect in the springtime garden. They are simply splendid as a cut flower! Alluringly fragrant blooms, lush foliage and a wide range of growth habits are key ornamental features. Peony Plant Sale: 5:30- 6:15 p.m., or until we are sold out. Early access to the sale area will not be permitted. A selection of potted herbaceous peonies will be offered for sale, including old-fashioned varieties from the Whitehall gardens and other varieties from Klehm’s Song Sparrow Farm in rural Avalon, Wisconsin. The following are just some of the peony varieties that will be available for purchase during the sale: Beautiful Senorita, Do Tell, The Fawn, Felix Supreme, Lancaster Imp, Little Pink Lullaby, Nellie Saylor and Ursa Minor. Potted peonies will be sold for $20/plant. Roy G. Klehm Lecture 6:30 p.m. $15 per person. Roy G. Klehm, one of the foremost authorities on peonies, will lecture as part of this year’s Festival. The Klehm family has shared their love and passion for growing and hybridizing peonies since the early 1900s. Today, Mr. Klehm continues to create grounbreaking new varieties. He has been featured on Martha Stewart’s television show and his Song Sparrow Farm was featured on the cover of Living in 1994. Mr. Klehm’s many awards include the American Peony Society’s A. P. Saucers Memorial Medal (1989), the Garden Writers of America Will Jung Distinguished Service Award (1995), and the American Peony Society’s Gold Medal for the Pink Hawaiian Coral hybrid peony (2000).
